How we operate

Our commitments in detail

Safeguarding is treated as everybody's job, not a specialist function. Every member of staff completes safeguarding adults and safeguarding children training at induction and refreshes it annually, with senior staff trained to practitioner and lead level.

  • Named safeguarding lead with a deputy, available during all operating hours
  • Training aligned to the Care Act 2014, including the Mental Capacity Act and DoLS
  • Whistleblowing policy that protects staff who raise concerns, including anonymously
  • Same-day referral to the relevant local authority safeguarding team where thresholds are met
  • Statutory notifications to the CQC made within required timescales

Quality is measured rather than asserted. We track a standard set of indicators monthly and review them at management level.

  • Visit completion and on-time arrival rates, monitored digitally
  • Missed visits investigated individually, with root cause recorded
  • Spot checks and observed practice supervisions for every carer
  • Care plan reviews at six weeks, then every three to six months
  • Annual satisfaction survey for people we support and their families

Our workforce reflects the communities we serve, and we treat that as an operational strength rather than a statement of intent.

  • Carer matching on cultural background and language wherever it is wanted
  • Interpreting support arranged where no suitable in-house match exists
  • Recruitment and progression monitored for equality of outcome, not only of process
  • Care plans that accommodate faith, diet, dress and religious observance without negotiation
  • Equality & diversity training for all staff, refreshed annually

Carer turnover is the single biggest threat to continuity of care, so we treat retention as a quality measure rather than an HR one.

  • Rounds planned geographically to keep travel time realistic and paid fairly
  • Regular supervision and an on-call team that answers out of hours
  • Funded progression into specialist, senior and training roles
  • Wellbeing and resilience training, and access to peer support
  • Staff turnover reported to commissioners on request

We are working towards Net Zero by 2036, with a published Carbon Reduction Plan setting out the baseline and the steps.

  • Route optimisation to reduce carer travel mileage
  • Support for staff moving to public transport, cycling and electric vehicles
  • Digital-first record keeping — care plans and MAR charts are paperless
  • Responsible disposal of PPE and clinical waste in line with UKHSA guidance
  • Suppliers assessed on their own environmental credentials

All training is delivered by our in-house academy, which also trains other providers across London and Hertfordshire.

  • All required Care Certificate standards completed during induction
  • Competency signed off through observed practice, not attendance alone
  • Mandatory and refresher training on a rolling annual cycle
  • Specialist condition training matched to the people each carer supports
  • Training completion rates reported to commissioners on request

Medication is the highest-frequency risk in homecare, and it is governed accordingly.

  • Electronic MAR charts with real-time alerts for missed doses
  • Annual medication competency assessment for every carer administering
  • Clear protocols for covert administration, PRN and controlled drugs
  • All errors and near-misses reported, investigated and trended
  • Escalation to GP, pharmacist or 111/999 defined by severity

Our IPC policy is aligned to UKHSA guidance and reviewed annually, or sooner where national guidance changes.

  • Standard precautions and hand hygiene training for all staff
  • PPE supplied by us, never charged to staff or to families
  • Clinical waste handling and disposal protocols
  • Outbreak management plan with defined roles and reporting lines
  • Respiratory hygiene and sickness-reporting rules for staff

A tested plan for keeping care running when something goes wrong — severe weather, IT failure, transport disruption, staff shortage or a public health event.

  • Risk-rated service user list so the most critical visits are prioritised
  • Contingency staffing arrangements and reserve capacity
  • Offline access to essential care information if systems are unavailable
  • Defined communication plan for families, commissioners and the CQC
  • Plan reviewed and tested annually

Care generates sensitive personal data, and it is handled under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

  • Registered with the Information Commissioner's Office as a data controller
  • Named data protection lead and a documented breach response procedure
  • Role-based access controls on our care platform — carers see only their own clients
  • Family portal access granted only with the individual's consent
  • Annual data protection training for all staff

Care is a sector with recognised exploitation risks, particularly around international recruitment. We take that seriously.

  • Right-to-work and identity checks verified directly, never through a third party alone
  • No recruitment fees charged to workers under any circumstances
  • Staff trained to recognise and report indicators of modern slavery
  • Supply chain due diligence on agencies and subcontractors
  • Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking Policy, reviewed annually

Complaints are treated as quality information rather than as a nuisance to be managed.

  • Formal complaints acknowledged within three working days
  • Full response within twenty working days, with the investigator named
  • Themes reviewed monthly by the management team and fed into training
  • People are always told they may go to the CQC or the local authority instead, or as well
  • Complaint volumes and outcomes reported to commissioners on request

Modern slavery & human trafficking

We maintain a Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Policy (PE07), reviewed annually and read alongside our Safeguarding Adults, Recruitment, Right to Work and Freedom to Speak Up policies. Modern slavery is treated as a category of abuse under the Care Act 2014: staff are trained to recognise the indicators and required to report them, and we refer through the National Referral Mechanism where thresholds are met.

Every pre-employment check is carried out by our own team, no worker is ever charged a recruitment fee, workers keep their own documents, and wages are paid only into an account in the worker’s own name.

The policy is available to commissioners on request.

Carbon Reduction Plan

Our baseline and reported emissions, reduction targets and the pathway to Net Zero by 2036. Prepared in accordance with PPN 06/21 and reviewed annually.

2025 reporting year: 7.3 tCO₂e, down from an 8.0 tCO₂e baseline in 2024.

A note on quality assurance

We operate a documented quality management system rather than a badge. Policies are version-controlled and reviewed on a scheduled cycle, practice is checked through spot checks and observed supervisions, and findings feed an internal audit programme. The audit trail behind any of the commitments on this page is available to commissioners on request.

Paying for care

Costs & funding

How we charge, what shapes a rate, and the four routes funding can come from — including local authority support, Direct Payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare.

Digital care platform

The family portal

Skillcare runs a digital care management platform. Carers record every visit at the time it happens — tasks completed, medication given, food and fluids, and any wellbeing observations or concerns.

With consent, family members can be given portal access and see visit notes, medication records, wellbeing observations and the upcoming schedule in real time, from anywhere in the world. For families who live at a distance, it is consistently the thing they tell us matters most.

Real-time visit notes

Written at the visit, not from memory hours later.

Electronic MAR charts

With alerts when a dose is missed or late.

Wellbeing observations

Trends over time, not isolated readings.

Upcoming schedule

Who is coming, and when, visible in advance.
